The Tompkins Chamber and Tompkins Chamber Foundation have long been champions of the Tompkins County Wayfinding & Interpretive Signage Initiative. The Chamber received a grant from the Tompkins County Tourism Program in 2013 to create a plan for community gateway, intermunicipal, parking, and pedestrian wayfinding signage which would support our visitors and our transient resident population to better navigate the community. Having an attractive and informative wayfinding signage program is one part of effective community placemaking strategy.
Since that time, the Chamber has led efforts to seek funding for this project, before pandemic putting it on the “back shelf” for a time. In 2023, the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency allocated funding to a re-scoping initiative. Consultants Whitham Planning & Design have been hired to conduct this work, and an Advisory Committee formed to accomplish the re-scoping, revise the budget, and phase this project to achieve installation beginning in 2024.
