Tompkins County, along with 9 other regions, are starting the 4 phases presented by Governor Andrew Cuomo to UnPause NY State. Over the next few months, organizations throughout the State will face differing schedules and parameters for resuming business operations. With strong commitments to community partnership and public impact, the Tompkins Chamber of Commerce is continuing it’s L.E.A.R.N webinar series and shifting our focus to COVID-19 Business Reopen and Recovery.
This webinar focused on Legal Issues Relevant to Reopening During COVID-19. Hosted by Celia Bigoness, Associate Clinical Professor at Cornell Law School.
The webinar summarized the strategies employers may employ as they begin to reopen their businesses during this pandemic. Specific issues to be covered included:
-How to comply with employee privacy protocols while also maintaining a safe workplace
-Strategies to avoid potential legal liability
-Changing employees’ status and pay
-Addressing employee concerns about returning to work
-Visa options for immigrant employees
The webinar also discussed the privacy concerns that may arise under both federal and state laws when employers attempt to screen employees for COVID-related health issues, and will provide practical tips for what questions employers can (and cannot) ask their employees.
