Serving Eclectic Cuisine Late Into the Night, Fine Line Bistro is a Welcome Addition to Ithaca’s Restaurant Scene
Fine Line Bistro, Ithaca’s newest fine dining experience, is the end result of the combined creativity of Seth Gregory (Chef) and Danny Doyle (General Manager).  Their goal was to create a non-pretentious, transparent environment in which to dine.  The open kitchen allows for the diner to see up close and personal the work being done to their food.   The menu, entirely chef driven, is best described as ecle
ctic fusion.  It combines traditional styles of French and Italian cuisine with newer flavors and unique interpretations on the classics.

Chef Seth Gregory moved to Ithaca in 2003 and gained an array of experience working as the sous chef at Pangea in Ithaca.  Seth has a way of enticing the palate with flavor combinations not normally thought of.  He is continuously introducing new and different dishes and flavors in the restaurant.  Danny Doyle, the general manager of everything outside of the kitchen, grew up in northern New Jersey and found his way to the Finger Lakes via Hobart College where he earned a degree in design.  Upon graduation, Danny moved to Ithaca to help friends with their start-up restaurant.  Since that time, Danny has held a number of different positions in the local restaurant industry.  Fine Line Bistro starts serving drinks at 4:00 PM while food service begins at 5:00 PM and continues through midnight and sometimes later.   They are closed on Tuesdays.

T-Burg Mini Golf Family Entertainment Center to Open July 5th

Located on 23 acres at 1966 Trumansburg Road (Route 96 South), T-Burg Mini Golf Family Entertainment Center offers the “next best thing in family entertainment”.  Scheduled to open to the public on Saturday, July 5th, this brand new complex will initially feature a 25,000 square foot miniature golf course, a 450 square foot covered pavilion and a 1,500 square foot building which will house dozens of arcade games.  An intricate 8 acre corn maze will open in September 2008.    The Cayuga Waterfront Trail’s Rick Manning and The Plantsmen’s Dan Segal teamed up to landscape the property. The landscape concept evolved from a links-style to a three-zone plant community layout centered on the waterfall and creek features of the course.  They integrated almost 2000 non-native plants that are well-adapted to the site conditions.

Additional construction will take place in phases over the next 3 to 5 years. Batting cages, an additional 18-hole miniature golf course and an electric go-kart track are planned. Birthday parties and group function reservations are now being taken for July through the end of October. Hours and rates are posted on their website.

Concept Systems Renovates, Revitalizes Historic Downtown Building

Founded in 1993, Concept Systems is a strategic decision-making consulting company. A key component of CSI’s work is a proprietary Internet-based software tool called Concept System®, which is a planning methodology that structures and supports an organization’s efforts to develop responsive, meaningful plans and systems.  As a software developer and consulting firm focused on the new creative economy, Conc
ept Systems Inc. could have moved anywhere in the northeast, or the country when it ran out of space.  But it didn’t.  CSI President and C.E.O. Mary Kane and her husband opted instead to invest their own money as private citizens, to purchase a 100 year old building at 136 The Commons, and move the firm there, keeping 15 employees in the midst of downtown Ithaca’s dynamic environment that includes retailers, restaurants and the occasional downtown fair or festival.   The decision led to another investment of more than $330,000 to renovate the second and third floors of the building, before the company could move in.

Kane says the real story is the impact this kind of revitalization has on downtowns and businesses. “We feel that both the community and our staff members benefit from the synergy of being in the downtown area. We also felt that it was important that someone try something not yet achieved… to set a standard for others and to support the downtown financially.”   The work was financed through the Tompkins Trust Company, Tompkins County Area Development and the Broome County Industrial Development Agency, with private funds from Kane and her husband as back up.  The fourth floor of the 100-year-old building contains private apartments. Repairs are expected to be made to them next year with a complete renovation of them possible in the next few years. Kane says she also wants to investigate the use of grant monies to renovate the building’s façade in the next year.

New Info Kiosks Help Travelers Navigate Downtown
Visitors will have an easier time finding downtown landmarks, thanks to three new information kiosks installed on the Commons. The brightly colored pedestrian signs provide easy-to-use maps, directions and travel information to help people find what they’re looking for in downtown Ithaca.

“Information signs may not seem like a big deal to longtime residents, but they’re a lifesaver to our visitors,” said Louise Felker-Holl, project coordinator for the Ithaca/Tompkins Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Ithaca can be a confusing place to navigate, and with these kiosks, we’re making the experience a little more pleasant for visitors and new residents alike.” The pedestrian sign project was jointly created by Tompkins County Area Transit (TCAT), the Ithaca/Tompkins Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Ithaca Alliance. The project was funded through TCAT using money from federal and state transportation programs. Sue Willcox was project coordinator for TCAT.

The four-sided kiosks, each capped by a bright red pyramid and the international “i” symbol for “information,” are located on key pedestrian intersections in downtown. They point the way to numerous places of interest including theaters, shopping, dining, lodging, parking, transportation and parks. Signs are located on the east and west ends of the downtown Commons, and at Bank Alley on the corner of Seneca Street and Tioga Street. A fourth kiosk will be installed near Cayuga Green when construction of that project is completed.

Ithaca Beer Company Named Best Craft Brewery in New York State

The Ithaca Beer Company recently swept a field of 35 New York State Breweries at the 11th annual TAP New York Craft Beer Festival held in the base lodge at Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in the beautiful northern Catskill Mountains.  Ithaca won both the Gold and Silver medals for individual brews, and received the F.X. Matt Memorial Cup as NY’s overall best craft brewery.  The Festival drew a crowd of professional tasters and beer lovers from across New York State. During the 2-day event, they tasted and ranked nearly 150 craft brews. Ithaca Beer’s “TEN” – part of its specialty “Excelsior!” series – won the Gold as the best-tasting beer in the state. The Silver went to Ithaca’s Flower Power, its signature IPA.

Ithaca Beer’s owner, Dan Mitchell, said the award as best overall brewery is confirmation that the company is achieving its goal:  “Our focus has always been on making the best-tasting beers possible.”  Head Brewmaster, Jeff O’Neil, said: "It's a great honor to have the hard work put in by our six production people recognized and thought of so highly.  A lot of brewers that we were up against are brewing world-class beers that have inspired us, and it's really satisfying to know that we are among the best out there."

Ithaca Beer’s Gold-winning brew “TEN” is currently available in 750ml bottles and was concocted in tribute to the company’s 10 year anniversary.   From the label: "TEN is an Imperial American Extra Strong and Special Double Red Ale. Our anniversary beer, TEN, is brewed with too many malts to list and an excess of American hops, including several additions during fermentation. Enjoy the russet color, aggressively hoppy aroma and flavor, rich body and fiery finish."   Stop by New York State’s Best Craft Brewery  today and pick up your bottle of award winning beer!

The Planstmen Nursery Offers the Greatest Diversity of Native Plants in Central New York

Located at 482 Peruville Road in Groton, The Plantsmen Nursery specializes in native plants for all horticultural settings and natural habitats--from downtown and suburban ornamental gardens, to pond restoration, wetland plantings in creeks and streams, woodlands and meadows.  Daniel Segal took ownership of The Plantsmen Nursery in May of 2006.  Within two years, the nursery has almost completely re-crafted its identity, and established its niche in the nursery scene of Central NY.   One of the nursery's central values is choosing plants that work with the given site conditions.  Not only does this eliminate the need for soil amendments and extra care, but it is part of their core message: plants chosen to suit your garden's conditions will perform best with the least care.

The Plantsmen Nursery grows trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, ferns, ground covers and vines, and most of their plants are either propagated at the nursery, or up the road at their production yard.  Plants not propagated on-site are still potted and grown on site for many months so they're well-acclimated by the time they're ready for sale.  They also offer a range of traditional and not-so-traditional plants from compatible climate zones in other parts of the world.   The Plantsmen Nursery offers exceptionally personal, customized design and installation of natural landscapes for the smallest yards to sprawling country properties.

New Brewpub Now Open in Ithaca

One of the questions we often hear at The Chamber is “Why doesn’t Ithaca have a brewpub?”   The wait is finally over as Ithaca now has a unique Micro Beer Company located in Bishop’s Small Mall on Cinema Drive, behind the Triphammer Mall and the new Homewood Suites. Owner Stephen Fazzary opened Northeast Pizza a couple years ago (in the space formerly occupied by Rogan’s Northeast) with the intention of opening a brewpub as well.  After many months of renovations, The Scale House Brewery and Pub is now offering customers freshly brewed beer straight from the barrel!

The brewery is currently offering 3 types of craft-brewed beer;  a pilsner, a red ale, and a dark bock perfect for the winter. Sampler flights are available with this trio plus a fourth small glass, a "black & tan" mixture of the pilsner and bock.  Since the space is connected to Northeast Pizza, diners can enjoy tasty Italian fare while sipping their frosty beverages.  Live acoustic music is also on the horizon and Fazzary expects to expand the menu in the coming months as well.  Stop in soon and surround yourself with good people, a warm and friendly atmosphere and great tasting beer.

European-style Coffee House, Brötchen, Celebrates Grand Opening

For decades, brötchen (pronounced "BRERT-khen") have been served in the finest coffee shops and coffee houses in Austria, Germany and other northern European cities.  For Michael Horzing, the owner of Ithaca’s newest coffee shop Brötchen, cooking is the ultimate expression of life.   If you ask him, food is not only sustenance, but the meals we cook and the desserts we eat all contain history, art, culture, mathematics, science and, yes, even love.  As a young child growing up with his grandparents in Austria, Michael’s idea of good food and the love of home were always intertwined. Michael began his formal training in Vienna, Austria and continued in Rome, Italy where the love of great food is no less essential to life. There, Michael apprenticed in Alfredo Di Roma becoming fluent in the Italian language and cuisine.

When he opened Brötchen this past November, Michael Horzing was delighted to be welcomed by a large international community. Many people have said that this European-style coffee house serving delicious coffees, baked goods, and daily lunch specials has filled a niche on The Commons. Horzing states, “After so many years away from Europe and away from the restaurant business, opening a coffee house inspired by the Viennese Kaffeehaus was, in a way, like coming home again. And, the work involved in owning and operating a coffee house that serves authentic Austrian and German food and European baked goods is a labor of love.”

Thayer Appliance Celebrates 80 Years
In 1927 Paul Thayer started his own business in his West Seneca Street home selling radios.  He named the business Thayer Radio Company.  The radios were on consignment to Paul from Treman King & Company, a local department store.  Paul’s primary income, however, was as a print shop teacher at Ithaca High School (now the DeWitt Mall).  Soon the radio sales exceeded the capacity of his house and he built a one room store attached to his house.  Paul then decided to go full time in the business and he gave up his teaching job.  Later that room was expanded with a second display room and a repair shop in the rear, nearly filling up the play yard enjoyed by his three sons, Rog, Bill and Larry.  By 1940, Paul was selling refrigerators (“See Thayer for Frigidaire”), kitchen stoves and washing machines in addition to radios and small appliances, thus the name change to Thayer Appliance Company.

Just before WW II Paul bought the property at 417-419 West Seneca Street and tore down an old tin shop.  Larry took over the business in the late 50’s and built several additions to the original building.  He expanded the business with television being a big item at that time.  Upon Larry’s semi-retirement in 1995, his son Doug took over as the third generation owner/operator and continues the fine reputation of the Thayer businessmen in Ithaca.  Doug has won many awards as did his father, Larry and grandfather, Paul, usually in the form of vacation trips for outstanding sales.  The Thayer employees are treated as family and have very little turnover, with some working for the company over 30 years.  Taking good care of their customers over the years, selling great products at fair prices and the knowledgeable staff has earned an area wide excellent reputation and attest to the good name the Thayer’s have always had in Ithaca.

Catch Makers

Catchmakers Launches Personal & Confidential Matchmaking Service for CNY  Professionals
Catchmakers, Inc. offers a much needed alternative to internet dating.  With strict focus on confidentiality, efficiency and personal service, owners Carole Schiffman and Meredith MacLeod have created a service that provides the opportunity for successful, Central New York men and women to build long-term relationships. This old style of connecting people is a refreshing alternative to internet dating.  With an abundance of small cities and college towns, Central New York is brimming with single professionals -- academics, artists and business people.  Catchmakers is the first personal matchmaking service to actively match people across these close but disconnected community lines.

As a strictly confidential service, no one other than the matchmakers views your file. Carole and Meredith find appropriate matches and provide clients with honest information about potential dates. Other types of services leave it to members to take on the daunting and time-consuming task of wading through personal profiles, which is inefficient and compromises confidentiality.  Catchmakers is open to all who are single, divorced or widowed; heterosexual, lesbian or gay, and over the age of 25.  Catchmakers’ service is specifically designed for those seeking long-term commitments.

Moore’s Tree Farm Celebrates 20 Years
To celebrate Moore’s Tree Farm's 20th Anniversary, Richard and Kay Moore recently presented a check for $1,000 to the Ithaca YMCA's CEO Paul Grennell.  The check kicks off the couple's plan to collect donations during the Christmas season to help area youth participate in YMCA programs throughout the year.  The YMCA isn't the Moores' only charitable project.  Richard is also Vice President of the National Christmas Tree Association, a group that sends trees to active troops stationed at 20 bases nationwide.

Located at 575 Auburn Rd., (Route 34) in Lansing, The Moores started their business 20 years ago as a retirement business after Richard finished a career teaching technology at Cornell's Hotel School.  But the business grew into a second career for the couple as the farm grew to hold the 65,000 trees that are there today.  The trees are available for customers to cut themselves, or pre-cut for Christmas and landscaping.  During the Christmas tree season the farm has many events including visits from Santa, horseback riding, and this year Mulch Mountain, a hill for kids to climb on that is made from recycled pieces of trees.
